Macclesfield Town - Steve

Tuesday night saw the fourth instalment of Ashton United FC Supporters Club volunteer recognition awards. Recommended to us by both the manager, Robbie Savage, and forward, Alex Curran, Steve Caulcott was a name everyone around the Moss Rose knew. Having followed Macclesfield FC for 65 years, he knows the ups and downs of football as well as anyone.

In the last 9 years he has missed only one game, that because of illness, and even tried to discharge himself from hospital to get there (albeit unsuccessfully). We met pitch-side before the players came out to warm up, and he was immaculately dressed in his Macclesfield blazer (adorned with pin badges) and his club tie.

His passion for the club and the fans was clear from the off, there were so many people, supporters and staff alike, stopping and greeting him as we stood and had a chat at the end of the players tunnel. There weren't many he didn't know by name either.

Steve has never attended a Premier League Game and much prefers what he calls "Proper Football" (don't we all...?) because of the camaraderie and the atmosphere around non-league. We very much look forward to seeing you at Hurst Cross when the two teams meet again, and everyone here at Ashton United Football Club wishes you many more years of following your team and enjoying it all the while.
